ORDER AND DISORDER
Portrait Disorder
For this task we had to capture around 10 images to create a smooth series which created a repeating film-like effect. When a photographer takes a portrait image he/she would normally aim to capture a focused image. However, the task below aims to create a series of disordered portraits.
Second Response
To refine my work, I went to Richmond in Southwest London. When walking in a field I saw a cow which was making subtle movements, which I thought would be suitable to involve in a gif. I used a photo burst to capture the cow's small movements. This resulted in a clear gif.

Romain Laurent
Romain Laurent
Romain Laurent was raised in the French alps and now lives and works in New York as a professional photographer.
In this image a man can be seen with water constantly flowing from the top of his head. The man's t-shirt is wet and he is blinking. This creates a strange series of images. There is a feeling of sadness that is presented by the man's melancholy-looking face. The water could represent tears or the cliche idea of a thunder cloud above his head.
|
In this image a man can be seen looking from one ear to the other as each one twitches. This image creates a sense of bemusement and confusion. The mans body from the neck downwards keeps completely still which makes the image extremely effective.
|
In this image a woman can be seen producing a cloud of purple gas from her face. The woman's face cannot be seen as her hands and the smoke is covering it. This makes the series of images very abstract and strange. The picture is also effective due to the perspective of the background.

Symmetrical Order
Strong lines and symmetry are themes in today's architecture. I searched for areas of symmetry within architecture.
Sasha Levin Artist Analysis
Sasha levin is a moscow based photographer. He is well known for his photos that show symmetrical order, like the ones below.
In this image the subject can be seen standing on a reflective floor looking out at the skyline, presumably in the morning. the landscape can be seen reflecting on the floor. The image is particularly effective due to the rising sun in the left hand side of the image.
|
In this image the subject can be seen standing in the center of the image. The image is looking down a tunnel with glass windows and there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The image is effective due to its perspective. There are also hanging lights which create the effect of a vanishing point.
|
In this image three escalators can be seen from an upward looking point of view. The left hand escalator is moving upwards and the right hand escalator is moving downwards. The escalator in the middle is stationary. This is effective, as the central part of the image is empty. The lights on the handrails create a vanishing point effect.

In this case the general type being students.

Three Strands
For my strands, I have decided to showcase the following titles
1. Distortion with liquification.
2. Distortion of light
3. Gif disorder
4. Distortion with liquification.
1. Distortion with liquification.
2. Distortion of light
3. Gif disorder
4. Distortion with liquification.
Distortion of light
For this strand I have shaken my camera while taking pictures from my window during sunset. This creates a distorted effect and contrasts the silhouetted foreground with the blue sky and yellow glow of the sun.
To edit my photos I have layered portrait images over the blurred light images. To blend the images together I lowered the opacity of the portraits.
Second Response
For this second response I used a strobe light in a darkroom. I got the subject to move while the strobe light flashed at a fast speed. I also used a fast shutter speed photo burst. This enabled me to capture overlapping frames of different opacities.
To edit these images I increased the saturation and the brightness of these images. This created a more vibrant and warmer colour.
Gif Disorder
For this strand I created gifs by taking pictures of something simple such as this pencil rotating. Gifs are files made up from a small number of frame which loop themselves.
The Gifs were fairly easy to form on photoshop but it was quite a meticulous process to take photos at each stage of motion. The first image Gif was fairly jerky but the second image was much more fluid.
Second Response
For this second response I have created more complex gifs with more frames. For this particular gif I have used coloured houses from monopoly and I have changed the houses around to create a flowing effect. This creates a smooth action.
Distortion with liquification
For this strand I have taken photos of order and disorder. However, I have distorted them on photoshop by using the liquify effect. This creates an abstract swirling effect.
Second Response
For this response I cut he subject's figure and pasted it onto a landscape image of the beach. I chose to glow the outline of the subject and I used a purple hue on the landscape image.
I then liquified the subject's face. This created a
I took photos of different subjects smiling and decided to distort their faces using the liquify 'spiral' effect
This achieved a sense of anonymity of the subject.
Third Response
Fourth Response
For this further development I went to Brick Lane and I took photos of graffiti intending to liquify the photos. The photos I took contained lots of variation of colour and themes.
Fifth Response
Sixth Response
For this response I visited the City of London area. I found imposing skyscrapers and brutalist architecture to photograph.
Artist Analysis:Yovcho Gorchev
Yovcho Gorchev is a London based photographer who uses the liquification technique in her work.
In this image a man's face can be seen in black and white. However this traditional-looking portrait has been distorted. The face has been distorted with the liquification method which stretches the pixels of the image in the desired direction.
|
In this image a similar liquification effect has been used to create a wavy effect on the portrait. Also, the woman's face has been copied several times across the image. A purple hue has also been used to mask the image.
|
In this image liquification has been used in a way that the original image is also unrecognisable. The image has been masked to create a glossy effect. The image seems as if it could have been covered with glass.

Final Piece

Key words: Liquify, architecture, symmetry, low angle, distortion, repetition, contrast, urban, filter, hue, saturation.
For this final series of images, I have focused on the urban landscape of london. They were inspired by the work of Yovcho Gorchev but instead of liquifying portraits, I have liquified architecture. I have taken photos from a low angle. When editing them, I have distorted them with the liquify tool and I have put them through the process of symmetrical order and disorder. These filters have created a higher level of contrast between pale skies and the dark urban infrastructure.
