Barbara Kruger
In the image a woman can be seen looking at her reflection in the mirror. There words in the image prophesize, who's the fairest of them all . This is a famous line from Snow White. However, it also represents the focus of women's beauty in the media.

Martin Klimas
Different coloured paint can be seen bouncing of the black floor. There is also a black background. This is effective as the brightly coloured paint contrasts with the black background. The different coloured paint creates a sense of liveliness and chaos.

In this image, a ceramic model of some shaolin monks has been dropped on the floor and is in the process of being shattered into pieces. Martin Klimas has achieved this by using an extremely fast shutter speed and by using a photo burst. This would enable him to select the image with the best effect. The image is extremely effective for many reasons. In the ceramic model, the fighters are striking aggressive poses. Some of the models are breaking in the photo, such as the one on the far left whose head is falling from his neck. The dense shattered ceramic beneath the fighters creates a strong feeling of force.

In this image a vase holding a light green flower is being shattered. The image has been captured with a fast shutter speed. The image is effective. What would be usually be seen as nice photo with soft, gentle colours is intensified by the shattering glass.

William Eckersley
In this image a mound of cardboard and broken wood can be seen in what appears to be a abandoned warehouse. it seems to be very dark apart from the restricted amount of light projecting in through small windows on the roof. This creates an empty atmosphere.
|
In this image an empty hall can be seen with paint flaking of the walls. The image is effective due to the interesting perspective. It is also slightly eerie, as the viewer may wonder what is around the corner.
|
In this image a three windows side by side can be seen with light shining through them. The windows are obscured due to the windows being covered in graffiti and dirt. The windowsill is extremely dirty and there is broken plaster and glass on the floor. The work is similar to that of John Divola's photos of windows.

Force of Nature
For this task the concept was to capture images which represent the idea of the battle between man and nature. It was easy to find instances where Nature does beat man and in conclusion, I believe that nature is stronger. I took many photos of moss, weeds and other plants growing through cracks in the concrete and along walls.
In this response I have documented a series of photographs that depict the relentless battle between man and nature. In the images, plants and other greenery discreetly tries to grow through the cracks of the concrete structures that have been built on top of them.
Second Response
I refined my work by Experimenting with different locations in which I could capture certain images. I have created contrasts between drab, grey concrete, brown moss and the healthy green plants.
For this second response, I took photos of plants in my home environment and garden, where there are a significant amount of plants growing back through the ground that covered them. I refined my work by taking photos in a brighter light, which emphasised the green leafs and stems of the plants, contrasting them against the drab concrete background.

Nadav Kander
Nadav Kander (born December 1, 1961) is a London-based photographer, artist and director, who is known for a varied type of photos. Kander has produced many books and has had his work displayed across the world. Nadav Kander went to Chernobyl for his 'Half-Life' project, to mark the 20th century of the disaster. His images have most definitely created a dystopian feel.
In this image, a building which appears to be broken in half. This is ironic as the project that this image is from is called half life. There is no interior to the building. Only the facade of the building can be seen. There is also a silohuette standing in front of the building. The background of the image is white clouds. This creates an eerie atmosphere. The main focus of the image is the façade of the building.
|
In this image many beds with dusty pillows but without mattresses can be seen. Nadav Kander has taken the photograph from the central point. The walls seem to be slowly peeling and decaying. This creates a sinister feeling. It seems that the radioactive disaster in Chernobyl has taken away peoples lives as well as their homes.

In this image, a fairground wheel can be seen at the right side of the image. The paint on the ferris wheel is peeling away and the glass in the box has ben smashed. The ferris ground wheel is rusting away. A structure that would have once carried young children, families and couples, now stands empty.

Applied Force
This project focuses on the different effects that different forces have on different textures. In essence in this project, I took pictures of different coloured crumpled paper. I took these pictures in a way that they seemed abstract.
First Response
Second Response
For this second response, I used a varied range of materials. Furthermore, I took the photos in a much better light. I feel that this was an extremely difficult concept to develop as I found it difficult to make any changes to my previous work. Additionally, I could not find many materials at home that I could use for the response. However, I feel that I created a fairly interesting response to the set task with many different textures.
Third Response
For this response I used the force of liquids. I took placed a small case of water on a table against a white background and I took photos of blue ink diffusing into the water. I felt that this was a very interesting way to present force, as the blue ink contrasted with the transparent water. Additionally, The ink moved around the water in convection currents and I even used different coloured ink in the picture.
Instead of editing separate images, I decided to create a GIF. I created this by only using one photo of the ink droplets diffusing into water, but I adjusted the hue of the image on each frame. This disruption suggests the problematic clash between different elements.

Francois Delfosse
Francois Delfosse is a photographer who is well known for his project, 'Antarctica in a bag'. He says that the images were taken in a “glacier cave just North of the South Pole”, before adding that they are “viewed from the inside of a plastic bag”.
Imposing architecture
In this project I took pictures of architecture from low viewpoints, to make the architecture seem very imposing. I also tried to make sure that the building was the main subject of photo, without getting other objects in the way.
For this first response, I was able to take photos of imposing structures but additionally, I was able to find interesting perspectives. There were overcast clouds on the day that I took photos which limited the amount of light in my photos. However, the dark colours of the buildings contrasted well with the white clouds above.
Second Response
For this seconds response, I visited Southgate, an area where there was a gas tower and a tower block that was in the process of being demolished. This was an interesting imposing structure in particular because only a small chunk of the block of flats had been demolished.
The photos that I had taken were by far some of the best that I had taken during the 'Force' project. The sky on that day was completely blue except for a few floating white clouds. The there was a clear contrast between the dark buildings and the blue sky. Furthermore, the there were many birds flying above the buildings which gave the photos a 'chernobyl' feel and the broken edges of building conveyed a sense of neglect. I have refined my work by taking pictures of taller structures.
Artist Analysis
Bernhard "Bernd" Becher and Hilla Becher, were German conceptual artists and photographers working as a collaborative duo. They are best known for their series of photographic images, or typologies, of imposing industrial buildings and structures, often organised in grids or in the form of a digital contact sheet.
In this image a digital contact sheet of an assortment of industrial buildings can be seen. The pictures are in black and white. The images do not display any sort of emotion or feeling. This creates a sense of ambiguity and eeriness.
|
In this image another industrial structure can be seen. Images have been taken of it from many different angles. The images look quite strange. because of the twisted metal pipes protruding from the structure. In addition, the images have been arranged into a contact sheet.
|
In this image a tall water tower can be seen. The image looks considerably old, due to the sepia tone. There is graffiti on the brick walls and there are stains on the water tower.

Three Strand Response to Force
During this project I photographed two different strands. Light and Movement.
Light: For this strand I went to a bridge over a motorway at night. This enabled me to take pictures of vehicles at a slow shutter speed. Their headlines were turned on so I was able to capture the trailing light. To develop this style of image in the future I would use a tripod as some of my images turned out to be a bit blurred due to the shaking of the camera.
Movement: For this strand I took photos of my friend moving. I took photos of him jumping, running and tried to capture images with a fast shutter speed to compose the subject of my images correctly.
Structures: For this strand, I took photos of large and imposing structures in the financial area in the City of London. I captured images of the tallest buildings in London and composed them well.

The Force of Light
For this strand, I took photos of light trails on a dual carriageway near my house. I achieved the 'light trail' effect by using a slow shutter speed. i took photos from the side of the road as well as above the road.
The images that I achieved were good as there were clear trails of light on the road. I feel that I could have improved these images by using a tripod, because some of the pictures were slightly shaken and blurred.
The Force of Movement
For this strand, I took photos of my friend as he was in motion. I used a fast shutter speed to capture my friend in movement. This produced many interesting images and the fast shutter speed allowed me to take capture the photos in focus.
These images are considerably effective as the subject is extremely in focus.
Force of structures
For this strand I took photos of tall office buildings on Liverpool Street and in the surrounding 'City of London' area. It was very cloudy on this day and the glass buildings contrast well with the overcast sky. The structures that I took photos of were extremely large glass buildings which conveys a real feeling of imposing.
I edited the images by changing the hue and using the method of symmetrical order. In each of the edited photos, I also made sure that the sky was visible in each of the photos. This was to make sure that the size of the buildings was put into proportion and represented well.
Final Piece
For my final piece, I have chosen my most imposing photos, that convey a strong sense of force. I took photos of large buildings from a low angle highlight their size. The building I used to take these photos is effective because the top left corner of its frame has been demolished. The drab concrete walls contrast with the light blue sky. The image on the left shows birds flying in and out of the building while the image on the right shows the dark wall being lightened by a lens flare from the far right side of the image.
